Secure immediate protection for Tucky Joes

Secure immediate protection for Tucky Joes
The Issue
Save Our Waves is calling for urgent and responsible action to protect the surf break known as Tucky Joes (Miyaru Faru) in the Maldives. This wave is not only significant to surfers, but is part of a living reef and lagoon system that supports marine biodiversity, coastal stability, and the long-term sustainability of the tourism economy.
Tucky Joes exists because of a precise and delicate balance between coral reef, lagoon, and ocean processes. Activities that alter this balance risk permanently changing the wave and damaging the surrounding marine ecosystem. Once a reef system is disrupted or buried, it cannot be restored within our lifetime.
This is not just about surfing.
Surf breaks are indicators of reef health. When a wave disappears, it is because the reef beneath it is dying.
Healthy reefs support fisheries, protect coastlines, sustain tourism, and preserve the natural identity of the Maldives. The potential loss of Tucky Joes would represent not only the disappearance of a world-class wave, but also the degradation of an ecosystem that provides environmental and economic value far beyond recreation.
The Maldives depends on its reefs environmentally, economically, and culturally. Short-term decisions that compromise these systems risk long-term and irreversible consequences. Development should be guided by precaution, transparency, and scientific understanding, especially when dealing with natural systems that cannot be rebuilt.
Our Call for Responsible Action
We respectfully urge decision makers to:
• Pause activities that may impact the Tucky Joes surf break and its surrounding reef system.
• Ensure comprehensive environmental and coastal impact assessments are conducted with independent marine expertise.
• Increase transparency around environmental decision-making processes
• Recognize surf breaks as natural assets supported by healthy reef ecosystems, not obstacles to development
Save Our Waves is not against development.
We are against destruction that cannot be reversed.
By signing this petition, you are supporting responsible decision-making and the protection of Tucky Joes for present and future generations of Maldivians, environmental stewards, and visitors who value healthy oceans and reefs.
If we remain silent now, Tucky Joes will not be the last reef we lose.
