Hamden residents are being crushed under one of the highest property tax burdens in Connecticut.

Our town now ranks:

  • #1 in Connecticut for debt per capita
  • 2nd highest in equalized mill rate
  • Near the bottom statewide in both per capita income and taxable wealth per resident

At the same time, residents are now facing:

  • another major tax increase,
  • continued property revaluation phase-ins,
  • rising healthcare and utility costs,
  • inflation,
  • and growing financial instability.

For many families, seniors, and homeowners, this is no longer sustainable.

This is not about refusing to contribute. Hamden residents already are contributing, heavily. Local property taxes now fund the overwhelming majority of the Town budget, and taxpayers are carrying not only the entire increase in spending, but also offsetting declines in other revenues.

The problem is that the burden being placed on residents no longer matches the underlying economic reality of the community.

Without meaningful intervention, more residents risk:

  • foreclosure,
  • tax delinquency,
  • housing instability,
  • displacement from neighborhoods they have lived in for generations,
  • and worsening financial instability across the Town itself.

We are asking Governor Lamont, the Connecticut State Legislature, and state leadership to take immediate and meaningful action to help stabilize Hamden before the situation worsens further.

This may include:

  • increased recurring municipal aid,
  • debt relief or restructuring assistance,
  • structural funding reforms,
  • infrastructure and economic development support,
  • or other long-term stabilization measures.
  • Hamden residents should not be left to carry the full weight of decades of accumulated structural failures alone.

Please sign and share this petition to help bring urgent attention to the reality residents are now facing.
