The Issue

In memory of Koko, our beloved family member, I am starting this petition to bring attention to the significant emotional impact the loss of a pet can have on individuals and families. Our pets are more than just animals; they are companions, confidants, and cherished members of our families. Despite their profound influence on our lives, there are currently no laws in place in Canada to support employees in their grieving process after losing a pet. This oversight can lead to situations like mine, where I was penalized by my employer of 25 years for taking time off, approved by my doctor, to euthanize and mourn my Koko.

Pets provide emotional support, improve mental well-being, and contribute to our overall happiness. A Sudden loss can cause immense emotional distress, similar to the loss felt when a human family member passes away. According to a study by the American Veterinary Medical Association, nearly 38% of households have at least one dog, and 25% have at least one cat. This widespread pet ownership underscores the potential scale and impact of this issue.

Currently, Canadian labor laws do not acknowledge this critical aspect of life borne out by our special relationships with our pets. Employers are not required to offer bereavement leave for a pet’s passing, leading to grief-stricken individuals being forced back to work prematurely. Such policies can be counterproductive, affecting an employee’s productivity, morale, and mental health.

We propose a simple yet impactful change: to legislate bereavement rights specifically for pet owners. This law, which we hope to call "Koko's Law," would allow employees to take a few days of leave to process their emotions and begin healing without the fear of professional repercussions. Similar laws exist in some parts of the United States and many people support the idea, as evidenced by growing calls across multiple forums and social media platforms.

By recognizing the emotional bonds between people and their pets, Canada can lead the way in humane employee rights that acknowledge all types of family loss. Let us honor the memories of our pets like Koko by creating a legacy that supports and protects pet owners in their time of need.

I urge you to sign this petition to call for legislative change and advocate for "Koko's Law." Together, we can ensure that pet owners are treated with the understanding and compassion they deserve during one of life's most difficult experiences.
