We're making great progress. We won't stop until US Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg DECLINES the Streets For feasibility study application focused on tearing down the CA 90 Freeway.
STOP the 90 Freeway Tear Down!
**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass RESCINDS support for the CA 90 Marina Freeway Tear Down Proposal
October 23, 2023 (Los Angeles, CA) - Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement RESCINDING her support for the Streets For All Marina Central Park federal government application. Michael Schneider, the founder and CEO of Streets For All, was seeking $2 million dollars from the US Department of Transportation for a feasibility study to tear down the CA 90 Marina Freeway.
Bradford’s STOP the 90 Freeway Tear Down! petition has received more than 7,000 signatures calling on Mayor Karen Bass, US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Supervisor Holly Mitchell, CA State Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas and CA State Assemblymember Isaac Bryan to immediately rescind their support for the $2 million dollar Marina Central Park feasibility study. “I’m very thankful Mayor Bass heard us loud and clear and rescinded her support of Michael Schneider’s grant application seeking federal funds for a feasibility study to tear down the CA 90 freeway. Secretary Pete Buttigieg should follow Mayor Bass’s lead and immediately decline the Streets For All application” states Daphne Bradford, the STOP the 90 Freeway Tear Down! organizer.
Mayor Karen Bass initially wrote an August 23rd letter to Pete Buttigieg, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, supporting Streets For All’s Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods grant application. After learning of the massive constituent objections from Stop the 90 Freeway Tear Down! supporters living in Ladera Heights, Windsor Hills/View Park, Baldwin Hills, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Westchester, Del Rey, Inglewood, and other surrounding communities, Mayor Bass rescinded her support of the Streets For All feasibility study with the following statement:
“I want to be very clear – I do not support the removal or demolition of the 90 freeway. I’ve heard loud and clear from communities who will be impacted and I do not support a study on this initiative. I thank Angelenos for continuing to make their voices heard about this important issue.”
Councilmember Traci Park, Los Angeles City representative of the 11th district where the CA 90 Marina Freeway is located, issued a statement standing with her surveyed constituents who also live in the aforementioned Stop the 90 Freeway Tear Down! areas:
“After hearing your feedback, the results are clear: the 11th District does not support the demolition of the 90 Freeway. Your voice is why Mayor Bass rescinded her initial support and now opposes the study and demolition of the freeway. I’m thankful to every community member who made their voice heard. Your participation always matters.”
The statements from Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Traci Park are major wins for Ladera constituent Daphne Bradford, the 7,000+ Stop the 90 Freeway Tear Down! supporters, Save the 90 coalition and Keep the 90. While residents understand the need for infrastructure improvements and urban development, it is crucial that Ladera Heights, Marina del Rey, Windsor Hills, Culver City, Westchester and all CA 90 Marina Freeway constituent users have a say in major decision-making processes that directly affects their daily lives and well-being. Daphne Bradford is a 31 year resident of Ladera Heights.
