Bring Back Country Of Origin Food Labeling

Bring Back Country Of Origin Food Labeling
Why this petition matters
If you go to the supermarket and buy beef or pork products plastered with the words "PRODUCT OF U.S.A.," you might assume that the meat actually came from domestic livestock. But you could be wrong.
The USDA doesn't require beef and pork to be labeled with its country of origin, meaning multinational corporations can (and do) pass off their imported products as U.S. goods. If this seems wrong to you, you're not alone — in recent polling, 89 percent of consumers say they want to know where their meat comes from.
Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL) is not only good for consumers, but also for domestic farmers. Without COOL, domestic ranchers and farmers tend to receive lower prices for their goods because multinational companies can import and misleadingly label meat rather than pay U.S. producers for their products. COOL did its job until 2016, when the USDA reverted to previous regulations that allow imported meat to be passed off as domestic products, in violation of the Meat Inspection Act.
America’s independent domestic ranchers, represented by Public Justice, have taken USDA to court. But that is not enough. The suit will not go all the way to restoring the transparency and domestic market that existed up until last year.
That is why this coalition is building a campaign for Executive and Legislative action. Immediately after Donald Trump was elected president, he stated he would stand up for American farmers by reinstating COOL. But within days, the Trump administration succumbed to pressure from multinational corporations and reneged on his pledge. We are demanding Trump follow through and ensure that COOL is part of his Administration’s agenda.
Please add your name to the petition below telling Secretary of Commerce Wilbur L. Ross that this administration’s trade policies must protect American producers and consumers, not just corporations, by bringing back COOL. Adding your voice will show the Trump Administration that the public remembers the president’s commitments and that we demand a government for the people, not multinational agribusiness.
