Secretary McMahon: Present a National Plan to Close the Education Gap for Boys

Secretary McMahon: Present a National Plan to Close the Education Gap for Boys
The Issue
As a parent, I’m deeply worried about what’s happening to boys in America’s schools — and I’m not alone.
Our boys are falling behind, and the data is overwhelming:
- Boys are less likely than girls to be ready for kindergarten.
- They score lower in reading, writing, and behavior.
- They are more likely to be suspended, drop out, or fall behind grade level.
- And they are now less likely to attend or finish college than girls.
This isn’t just a trend. It’s a growing national crisis—and it’s starting in the earliest grades.
We’re calling on U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to lead with a comprehensive federal strategy to close the education gap for boys, including:
- A national task force focused on gender disparities in education
More early-intervention programs starting in preschool and kindergarten - Recruitment of male educators, especially in early childhood and elementary school
- Expanded support for students with ADHD, dyslexia, and behavioral needs
- Resources for low-income families and students of color, who face even greater disadvantages
This is not about taking away support for girls—who have their own challenges. It’s about recognizing that boys are struggling in school systems not designed for the way many boys learn, develop, and express themselves.
We can’t afford to ignore this any longer. When boys start to believe they’re not good at school, they stop showing up—and some never come back.
Secretary McMahon, our sons need your leadership. Present a national plan to close the gap—before it grows any wider.
