SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE FOR SYLVESTER NORTH

SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE FOR SYLVESTER NORTH
The Issue
Prepared by Tamiko Scott Bonds Liaison & Legal Advocacy Supporter
I TAKE ACTION | EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE | LET'S STAND FOR JUSTICE
I write to you not only as a legal advocate but as a voice for justice, fairness, and rehabilitation on behalf of Mr. Sylvester North, who has served the vast majority of his life behind bars. His Parole Commutation Application now pending before the Michigan Department of Corrections deserves immediate and compassionate consideration, not only because of the man Sylvester has become, but because of the toll this extended incarceration has taken on, his beloved mother, his children and his community at large.
The Case for Commutation: A Humanitarian and Public Interest Imperative.
Sylvester North was incarcerated as a young man. Like many individuals sentenced in their youth, he was shaped by his environment, lacking proper resources, legal representation, and access to the systemic support that could have altered his life’s trajectory. Yet, over the decades of incarceration, Mr. North has demonstrated unwavering commitment to change, growth, and contribution.
He has:
- Earned academic credits and is actively pursuing degrees in General Studies and obtained an Associate in Business Administration through rehabilitative prison programs.
- Served as a peer mentor, positively influencing young inmates entering the system for the first time.
- Maintained a disciplinary-free record for years, earning the respect of correctional officers and staff alike.
- Participated in spiritual development, restorative justice workshops, and skill-building programs.
Mr. North poses no threat to public safety. In fact, he represents the very essence of what our correctional system should strive to achieve — a man transformed, ready to return home and serve his family and society with dignity.
The Cost of Inaction: What Continued Incarceration Means
To His Mother:
His mother, a senior citizen in fragile health, has sacrificed everything to remain present in her son’s life. Every visit, every phone call, every birthday missed, she has held on with the belief that justice would one day bend toward mercy. The prolonged incarceration of her son is not only a psychological wound, it is a barrier to a final reunion while she is still alive. Her only daughter, Stephanie North was killed in a tragic car accident in 1988. Her only son tried and convicted to serve a prison sentence of 20 to 46 years, but was offered a plea deal of 4 years. Our people are destroyed for lack of knowledge and resources.
To His Children:
Thomas has watched his children grow up behind concrete walls. He has never had the chance to walk them to school, guide them through challenges, or hold them through life’s trials. Reuniting him with his children would restore generational healing - a father, present and active, who now understands deeply what it means to serve, support, and uplift family.
To the Community:
We do not gain safety or justice from incarcerating men who no longer pose a risk or denying men a second chance at Life, when a Life wasn't taken. We lose resources, we stifle growth, and we delay the healing that comes with redemption. Mr. North has plans to mentor youth, support re-entry programs, and contribute to community restoration.
His release is not a risk — it is an ASSET!
Why Your Signature Matters
This is not simply a case of clemency — it is a call to moral courage. Every community leader, every church member, every social justice ally, and every concerned citizen has a role to play.
Signing the petition and sending in a letter of support helps demonstrate to the Michigan Parole Board and the Governor’s Office that:
Mr. North, my beloved cousin has a strong support network prepared to assist with housing, employment, and reintegration.
The public supports second chances and believes in the rehabilitative purpose of prison.
His case is being watched, documented, and uplifted by a coalition of concerned citizens.
Final Plea: Restore What Time Cannot Replace
Sylvester North has given the system more than enough time. Now, we call on that same system — and on every person who reads this letter — to give him a second chance. Not simply for Sylvester, but for his mother, his children, and the community that stands to gain from his wisdom, strength, and story.
We urge immediate action to approve his Parole Commutation Application. We ask you to sign the petition, write letters, share his story, and stand up for justice that restores instead of punishes indefinitely. No money is needed - Your signature of support is all we are asking.
As of August 2025, he will have served 21 years. Let's reunite a mother and son. She prays that one day she can make him a meal. 💔🙏🏼
I pray that God continues to have Mercy and Grace upon us all.. 🕊️
Thank you all,
