Release the Orca Whales held in captivity and give them to sanctuaries

The Issue

To start off with, we are a group of sixth graders trying to make a change in this world. So please help and support us do just that. Thank you!

There are many things you may not know about SeaWorld that have been kept secret for a long time. One of these things is that if an Orca Whale gets any sort of sunburn, the employees at SeaWorld cover them up with Black Zinc Oxide. Black Zinc Oxide is very similar to the color of the Orca Whale's flubber. Many of the whales get these burns from their tank being too shallow. The deepest tank they have for them at SeaWorld is 40 feet deep, which is not nearly deep enough to protect them from the harsh elements.

You may have also heard of the Orca Whale named Tilikum. Tilikum, 32-year old Orca Whale, was captured and held in captivity at the age of 2. He was torn away from his family and put in a confined concrete tank, all for a hefty profit. As you also may not have known, many of these whales have been captured, not saved. And if they are not captured, then many of the whales by that one is killed.

Yet another reason is that in the wild, Orca Whales normally, on average, live up to the age of 100. In captivity, though, Orca Whales only live up to about 9 years of age. Some of the signs that you can tell that these animals are unhealthy, or over-stressed, is their Dorsal Fins collapsing. SeaWorld claims that the collapsing of these Dorsal Fins is common and natural for all Orcas. But, only 1 out of 5 percent of male Orcas in some populations, out in the wild, have fully collapsed Dorsal Fins. In SeaWorld, on the other hand, they have many Orca Whales with collapsed Dorsal Fins.

So please, for all of these many reasons, help these Orca Whales being held captive get released into a sanctuary, or get a much larger area for them to swim in and to get taken care of better.
