The Issue

I am a young woman who survived a sudden, life-threatening stroke. After my recovery, tests showed I have an undiagnosed Factor II (prothrombin) mutation. When combined with estrogen-based birth control pills, this hidden genetic trait posed a serious risk. This experience underscored for me a terrifying reality that many young women face without even knowing it.

Current medical guidelines do not require evaluating women for genetic mutations before prescribing birth control, leaving countless women vulnerable to serious, and sometimes fatal, health risks. Genetic mutations, such as Factor II and Factor V Leiden, significantly increase the likelihood of strokes or blood clots when combined with hormonal contraceptives. Many women have these conditions undiagnosed, carrying a hidden threat simply by managing their reproductive health. For instance, according to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 1 in 2000 people in the U.S. have the prothrombin mutation. Without proper screening, these individuals may unknowingly increase their stroke risk by using certain contraceptives. Additionally, hormonal contraceptives are among the most common means of birth control for young women, making this issue both widespread and urgent. Mandating genetic testing before issuing birth control prescriptions could save countless lives by identifying those at risk and guiding them toward safer contraceptive options. It is crucial to implement this practice to safeguard women's health and prevent avoidable tragedies. This approach is not only a proactive health measure but also an essential step towards empowering women to make informed decisions about their health. Join me in urging health authorities and lawmakers to mandate genetic testing for all women before starting them on birth control. Together, our voices can call for changes to health protocols that preserve lives and improve the quality of care available to millions of women. Please sign this petition to protect women's health and advocate for safer birth control practices.
