Scrap the blanket ban on cockerels on council sites

Scrap the blanket ban on cockerels on council sites
The Issue
My name is Tom , and I have been a proud keeper of cockerels on my plot at a Durham County Council site for many years. These cockerels are not just animals; they are an integral part of my life. They have been there through thick and thin, providing joy and a sense of purpose. However, a recent blanket ban on cockerels by the Durham County Council threatens to tear this cherished aspect of our lives apart.
This decision not only affects me but also many others who have nurtured these birds for years. It feels unjust for the council to impose such a sweeping ban without acknowledging the profound role these animals play in our lives. The council plots were established with the objective of promoting mental well-being, and for a lot of us, cockerels are a crucial part of that equation. Being around them has therapeutic benefits that have significantly contributed to my mental health over the years.
There hasn't been any concrete evidence presented to demonstrate that cockerels are causing any excessive harm or nuisance. Instead, they bring vibrancy and a connection to nature that is invaluable. We believe they should not be subjected to such broad restrictions without proper consideration and engagement with plot holders. And what will actually happen to the cockrels as if you ask rescuers they are struggling to rehome never mind this ban that means they would have to be euthanised but what actually for
One potential solution is for the council to engage directly with plot holders to discuss any concerns and perhaps consider individual assessments rather than an outright ban. Establishing guidelines to ensure that cockerels are cared for responsibly can address most issues without resorting to a blanket prohibition.
It's essential for officials to recognize the specific and varying circumstances of each plot holder. Not only does this respect the rights and needs of the individuals involved, but it also aligns with the council's own mission to support the well-being of its residents.
We urge the Durham County Council to reconsider this ban and work towards a more understanding and practical resolution that takes into account the diverse needs and roles that these animals play within our community. Your support in signing this petition will help us safeguard not only our cockerels but also the mental well-being of countless individuals who gain so much from their presence. Please sign this petition to ensure our voices are heard and meaningful change is achieved.
