Scrap Mandatory Maths and English GCSE Resits

The Issue

Struggling with Maths has been a significant part of my educational journey, and it has been a hurdle rather than a stepping stone in my pursuit of further studies. Being required to resit Maths in order to continue with college courses feels unjust and adds unnecessary stress to students like me who find the subject particularly challenging. Not having a natural aptitude for Maths shouldn't be a barrier to progressing in different fields that do not rely heavily on these subjects.

In the United Kingdom, students who do not achieve at least a grade 4 in their initial GCSE Maths and English exams are mandated to continue resitting these exams. This policy affects an overwhelming number of students each year. According to the Department for Education, as of 2019, nearly 31% of students did not achieve a standard pass of grade 4 in Maths, indicating a clear issue with the effectiveness of this policy.

Mandating resits is not only damaging to students' confidence but also limits their ability to focus on and excel in subjects they are genuinely interested in and capable of pursuing. This can lead to increased dropout rates and diminished enthusiasm for education as a whole. Furthermore, not all career paths and educational tracks necessitate advanced Math or English skills, and forcing students to allocate extensive time to these resits detracts from cultivating their true talents and passions.

I propose the government re-evaluates this mandatory policy and offers alternative solutions for students who do not excel in Maths and English. Implementing additional support and guidance, focusing on vocational skills or practical alternatives, would provide a more balanced educational framework, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive in their chosen field.

Many successful individuals succeed without these specific qualifications by focusing on areas where they can excel. Scrapping the mandatory resits for Maths and English would empower students to build their futures based on their strengths and interests rather than their weaknesses.

Please join me in urging the Department for Education to reevaluate the necessity of mandatory Maths and English resits, and allow students the freedom to pursue a more personalized and supportive educational path. Sign this petition today to make a difference in the future of education.
