Keep preschool in SSD

The Issue

Title one funds in the district have been used for the last 53 years to run free preschool for residents of the city of Scranton.  The recovery plan wants to now use those funds for “other interventions”.  Data proves the children who attended preschool in the district succeed in reading, math, and PSSAs.  The funds are there.  Why change what works.  Under the proposed change the 2.1 million that is used for preschool will now be dispersed and the principals will implement things to try to improve test score.   The research is out there.  For every $1 spent on early childhood education saves $16 in remediation.   This will also eliminate 28 positions.   Under the 6 million block grant we received from the state the stipulation is staffing levels stay the same from previous school year.  This may put us in jeopardy of losing that as well.
