No homes should be built on the highly contaminated land at Ravenscraig Hospital, Greenock

No homes should be built on the highly contaminated land at Ravenscraig Hospital, Greenock
The Issue
This ground was an industrial ash dump in the 1800's. After WW2, it became an NHS facility. In 2016, soil and ground water tests revealed excess levels of arsenic, mercury, lead and cadmium, as well as asbestos and also carcinogenic aromatic hydrocarbons (some registering 800 above levels DEFRA note as safe for use).
When the level of toxicity was discovered, the land was sold for £1 with a view to erecting 200 government funded social homes.
The topography of this 83 acres site is vast and complex. The entire southern half is a steep forested slope down which open waterways migrate to where the proposed development site will stand.
Despite no remediation strategy within the planning submission and no acknowledgement of the surrounding topography, permission was granted and the developer has announced construction will commence in September 2019.
Soon, 200 families will be placed in homes built in the central lower ground of highly contaminated land. At present these families have no voice.
As a developed society I do not believe we should risk the health and lives of our fellow citizens therefore no homes should be built on Ravenscraig Hospital Ground.
