Make Scottish Waters safer

The Issue

Last year, my 12-year-old niece died as a result of getting into difficulty in the River Leven in Balloch. We have tried since then to have improvements made to the Loch Lomond area and despite promises, no improvements have yet been made.

In the recent weeks and months all across the country and, in particular, Loch Lomond, several people have lost their lives in our waters. This is an indescribable heartache and more should be done to prevent more incidents like this. We would like to see improvements made around the most popular open water spaces, particularly where young teens and children visit regularly.

Loch Lomond in particular is very popular throughout the summer months and while locals may be aware of the dangers, non-locals and tourists are not. Too many children are losing their lives in our waters and changes need to be made.

We would like to see water markers indicating dangerous areas, visible signage erected to warn of dangers, more safety and buoyancy equipment available and more visible patrols. Although we are particularly concerned about Loch Lomond, it is clear that this is a national problem that needs to be addressed. How many more children need to die?
