Call on the Scottish Government to temporarily ban bikes from Portobello Prom during Covid
The Issue
As we know there has been a fairly large uptake in cycling during CoVid and for the most part people are responsible when using shared spaces. However two elderly residents have been knocked down and injured by speeding cyclists. Today a dog walker who had their pet on a short lead has sadly had their pet hit from behind and knocked down, the dog has had to be seen today by vets and again tomorrow which will impact on them financially. Whilst I welcome a green agenda I also welcome the value of both human and animal life over recreational cycling, some of which you would think is being carried out by entrants to the Tour de France. Portobello prom is a beautiful place for locals to walk with their children and animals. I ask for a temporary ban on cyclists there in the interests of safety, next time the injured party might not be so luck. Due to CoVid there is both increased footfall and cycle use however these accidents have not been caused by pedestrians. Could you please consider closing the prom to cyclists as an interim measure until the footfall subsides. There are currently plans to instate cycle lanes in the high street which would negate the need for the prom to be used in this manner
