Reject Route One - Save Our Wildflower Meadows

Reject Route One - Save Our Wildflower Meadows
The Issue
On Friday 19th February The team behind Greenhillock Glamping learnt to their devastation of a proposal which would see the destruction of their beautiful meadows, significant disturbance to the native habitat they have spent years creating and the ultimate closure of their innovative business. We have until 12th March to put a stop to this. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) have put forward three possible routes for their East Coat 132kV Upgrade Brechin to Tealing Overhead Line. One of which, Route One, would see a line of overbearing pylons and overhead wires, cut its way brutally though the carefully nurtured wildflower meadows which make Greenhillock so special to so many people.
Greenhillock Glamping is a five star boutique camping and glamping site set in five acres of wildflower meadows. In the six years Greenhillock Glamping have been open, they have fulfilled their promise to bring a responsible, sustainable, eco-tourism business to Angus and provide a viable future for the land at Greenhillock. In so doing they have created a tranquil space, much loved by families as a place to get off-grid and connect with nature. At the heart of what happens at Greenhillock is the belief that children and young people need wild places to explore and families need time away from screens and technology to relax and unwind together. Many young people lack opportunities to connect with the natural world and thus to learn to love and value it. Opening access to species rich habitats and sustainable technology, such as those at Greenhillock helps to solve these problems.
Some twenty five years before Greenhillock was a campsite it was a rewilding project, driven by the passion of one family to halt the decline of native species. A once barren, failed vegetable growing enterprise has been painstaking turned into a rich and diverse habitat for flora and fauna. Native trees and hedges provide vital wildlife corridors bordering the meadows. The meadows have been handsown and cultivated to maximise food and shelter for wildlife. The whole place twitters with native farmland birds from dawn until dusk in a huge reversal of the current declines. Badgers, hedgehogs and roe deer all treat Greenhillock as home as do our thousands of campers.
Our loyal and ever expanding clientele – our Greenhillock Pioneers – return to us year on year. Our pristine wildflower meadows and abundance of wildlife are a key part of our attraction, as are our eco-credentials. We support local food producers, provide employment and bring thousands of visitors to Angus each year. Many of our guests come solely for Greenhillock but leave having discovered Angus and all its delights.
Here's what one guest had to say "My husband and I have been visiting for a number of years and Greenhillock is an outstanding site. Waking up to the beauty of the wildflower meadow is an amazing experience I’m truly thankful for, that should be possible for people to enjoy for decades to come. It’s brought me back to Angus repeatedly, an area I would otherwise overlook. A stay at Greenhillock last year was the highlight of my entire year, as I was able to introduce family to it."
Co-Founder Kate Latham has this plea to share "If the proposal for Route One were to go ahead our business would be ruined overnight. My family’s livelihood would be gone. Perhaps more importantly than that, twenty five years of rewilding would be reversed and thousands of young people would be denied the chance to learn about the natural environment here. Greenhillock Glamping was born from a desire to share this beautiful setting with others and to showcase the importance of habitat conservation. After all we have worked for to create a successful local business to find ourselves in jeopardy in this way is devastating. Please sign this petition and get Route One Rejected"
