Earlier this year we all came together to accelerate the PBAC recommendation to approve Abraxane for pancreatic cancer patients. This was an incredible achievement and there are many families that will be able to spend one more Christmas, one more family gathering, one more family holiday together because they will have better access to this therapy. What is needed now, not in 10 or 20 years, is more support for pancreatic cancer patients and their families. They need better access to support services, access to nurses who specialise in pancreatic cancer, and they need to be given more options to participate in clinical trials. What I witnessed through my fathers ordeal was the inability to connect with a Professional who had experience with Pancreatic Cancer. The whirlwind needs to end My friends at Bedside to Bench have developed a Pancreatic Cancer Nurse Network. For patients, the Network will mean that every patient will have access to a nurse that has expertise in pancreatic cancer. The nurse will be networked with community services and support systems so that patients and their families have access to care when they have completed treatment. When at home, patients can also access a dedicated nurse via a pancreatic cancer helpline for those time when extra advice or support is needed. For the first time, there will not be any pancreatic cancer patients that fall through the gaps. Bedside to Bench will also make sure that our wonderful nurses are looked after with an annual retreat and ongoing professional and personal development opportunities. In November, I am participating in the Bedside to Bench 30 Day TLC Challenge to raise much needed funding for the Pancreatic Cancer Nurse Network. It's 30 days of eating a little healthier, getting a little more exercise and also making sure you are up to date with all of your medical check-ups. After all - prevention is better than a cure. There are two ways that you too can support the Pancreatic Cancer Nurse Network. 1. You can make a donation and support me in my TLC Challenge by following this link http://makingadifference.gofundraise.com.au/page/PeoplePower 2. You can join my team, or start your own fundraising team. All you need to do is register at http://www.30daytlc.com/register/ and the Bedside to Bench team will support you all of the way - just as they have supported me every step of the way in my own mission to improve outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients. I can't thank you all enough for the support that you have shown. So many people have benefited and will continue to benefit, just because you cared. Imagine - every pancreatic cancer patient in Australia receiving the care and support that they need. Let's make that happen. I can be contacted via nagem1@optusnet.com.au if you wish to seek further information about this amazing venture!
