Palm Oil: The Death of Our Orangutans

The issue

Palm oil is an oil very commonly used in the world for goods such as cookies, cakes, soaps, beauty products and much, much more. It’s loved by many because it produces a lot of oil in a small area and its cheapness. However, too much greed for it is leading to the destruction of a much-loved species, the orangutan.

Most of the palm oil that is being produced is being harvested in either Indonesia or Malaysia. In fact, those 2 countries account for 85% of the palm oil that is being produced in the world. Most palm oil is harvested illegally by corrupt people who are removing acres upon acres of rainforest for palm oil plantations. This gave Indonesia the highest deforestation rate in the world.

Rainforests are home to the orangutans, among many other animals. Did you know that these palm oil plantations are putting at least 200 species at risk for extinction? Between 1500 and 5000 orangutans are being killed a year, and already 80% of their population has disappeared in the last 20 years.

“Palm oil is only cheap in the supermarket. Everywhere else, it’s costing the Earth”

Some of you may think “well, I don’t care about orangutans, why should I care about palm oil?” Well, think again. Palm oil is actually also a huge contributor towards climate change. As the peat-filled soil in the palm oil plantations dry, they release large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas that has a global warming impact 23 times that of CO2. The large amount of cleared land is also highly susceptible to long-burning fire which would produce large amounts of carbon dioxide.

We are not only putting the orangutans at risk, but we are also putting our home, our beloved earth at risk. All this just for some oil.

But as hopeless as the situation may seem, there is still hope.

From now on, let’s reach out and help our harmless orangutan friends and save them from disappearing altogether.

From now on, let’s make a stand for sustainable palm oil.

Sign this petition in a hope to influence stores, companies and countries to abandon unsustainable palm oil altogether.

The time is ticking away, but together we can stop the bomb that may cause permanent damage towards the earth.

Thank you.
