Last week, Peter Dutton hit 'pause' on his cruel plan to take mobile phones away from Priya and others like her. But he’ll try again soon, when Parliament sits.
Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie is asking Australians if she should vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to Peter Dutton’s cruel plan. Please, can you forward this e-mail to Tasmanian friends who share your values?
Any Australian voter can have their say by completing this form on Senator Lambie’s website.
But if you live in Tasmania, Senator Lambie is your elected representative and your opinion has special significance.
Senator Lambie has been a friend to our Biloela family. A year ago today, she said:
“The community obviously love them. There has been a big community uptake on the support for them … Really, this was a chance for Dutton and his office to show a bit of heart and show some compassion … and let this family stay.”
Priya’s mobile phone is her lifeline. Without it, she couldn’t have contacted friends and neighbours when her family was snatched from their Biloela home two and half years ago. She could not have alerted her legal representatives when Mr Dutton tried to force her beautiful family from Australia to danger.
Without Priya’s mobile phone, Australians would never have seen the photos and videos of her two QLD-born girls, which show that Mr Dutton is lying when he says: “We don’t have any children in detention”.
When Peter Dutton had Priya dragged onto an unmarked plane in front of her two little girls, guards tried to take husband Nades' phone as they separated his distressed children from their Mum.
When the guards ambushed Priya at the Perth Hospital where she underwent medical tests unavailable on Christmas Island, they snatched her phone from her as she begged to contact her legal representative. Our laws meant they had to give it back.
With hope,
Angela
PS This beautiful photo was taken on Monday when Priya and Nades celebrated their 7th wedding anniversary as three-year-old Tharnicaa attended playgroup at Christmas Island school - the one place where the guards aren't allowed. Photos like this are the real reason Peter Dutton wants to take mobile phones away from the people he is detaining, forever.
