Access to VISAs in Australia
A VISA is a conditional authorisation granted by a territory to a foreigner, allowing them to enter, remain within, or to leave that territory. Types of visas include visit and tourism, study, work, live permanently, join partner or family, stay longer in Australia, refugee, humanitarian and many more. The cost of a visa can vary between the different types, some being only a few hundred and others up to $7,500.
Over the last decade, migration has contributed particularly strongly to population growth in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne. These are the areas where most people decide to visit, and where the most amount of visas would be applied for.
Since 1994, Australia has maintained a universal visa regime, meaning that every non-citizen in Australia must have a visa, either as a result of an application, or one granted automatically by law. Australia does not issue visas on arrival. We are aiming to change this law, and make visas more accessible to people who may need or require them to see family, work, or for other reasons. This issue is very important as visas greatly contribute to the Australian economy. A visa is needed to enter Australia, and cannot be issued on arrival. To receive a visa, you need to first apply for one before entering, which can be an issue for people who may not be able to access the internet and cannot apply. Depending on the type of visa, they can be expensive and many people may not be able to afford one. We would like to change this and help those people access visas more easily and possibly change their lives.
