Scottish Local Authorities to Unite in Support of the People of Afghanistan and Veterans
The Issue

For almost 20 years, UK Armed Forces fought to protect the people of Afghanistan from brutality and to make our world safer. Many thousands of Afghan people supported and trusted us. They believed us when we told them we would deliver a better future.
We are leaving their country before the job of securing peace and freedom was done. Millions are now left wondering what the future actually holds. The Taliban is arguably stronger that it was before.
UK Armed Forces served with honour and incredible bravery to protect those they had never met. Many of them paid the ultimate sacrifice. Families here grieve, having said goodbye to their loved ones for the last time at RAF Brize Norton. Thousands of others live with the physical and mental scars of war.
We could not stay forever, but the circumstances of the withdrawal are unacceptable and do not do justice to the people of Afghanistan or those who gave their all for their future. We have a moral obligation to care for the vulnerable who placed their trust in us and those who served to bring a better future to Afghanistan.
Where the UK Government has failed, we believe that Scottish local authorities must act. We call for:
1. All Scottish local authorities to develop a nationwide promise to care for those Afghan interpreters and their families who assisted our Armed Forces.
2. All Scottish local authorities to be ready to receive Afghan refugees fleeing persecution.
3. All Scottish local authorities to develop a nationwide programme to care for:
- Bereaved families who lost loved ones in Afghanistan; and
- Veterans who suffered physical and psychological injury as a result of service in Afghanistan.
