School Officials Concealed Weapon Training to Combat Active Shooters

School Officials Concealed Weapon Training to Combat Active Shooters
The Issue
In light of all tragic school shootings that have taken place in this country, it is time that we take to our own solutions that will best serve our community. We cannot always depend upon waiting for law enforcement to arrive because the most critical moments are those 5-10 minutes it will take for law enforcement to arrive and the other 20-40 minutes (if not longer) to disarm and apprehend the shooter. In this amount of time more victims are hunted by the shooter and victims who have already been harmed run the risk of bleeding out due to injuries.
Therefore I suggest we, as a community, look into implemented an armed training program for:
- Teachers
- Campus Aides
- School Administrators
- Parent volunteers
To participate in the armed training, candidates must:
- Complete livescan fingerprint
- Complete mental evaluation and be cleared to participate
- Have no criminal record
- Pass drug and alcohol screening
- Complete a physical and be cleared to participate
As an alternative to school employees who do not want to complete the armed training, it would be highly encouraged for them to complete an active shooter training in which these individuals will be responsible for:
- Keeping students together and safe
- Planning and mastering safest escape routes
- First aid and wound dressing
- Methods of emergency communication
This training will not be mandatory but available for those who want to go above and beyond in protecting our community.
Many might have the question about whether or not it is safe to have weapons on campus. In this age, I believe we run a bigger risk by not having weapons of protection on campus. But to give everyone a piece of mind:
- The concealed weapons systems won't be unnecessarily visible to the students. Think of this program as incognito
- Trainings will only take place in the absence of the students such as during vacations, furlough days, or any other time the entire campus will be shut down for the training.
- Weapons will only be accessible when active shooter alarm system is enabled.
- Weapons can only be released by fingerprint or password to those certified in the armed training
- Program will be overseen by school police department
Lastly, but more importantly, active shooter drills will have to take place at least twice per semester to keep the plans as effective as possible. Real weapons will not be used during the drills.
Many details will still have to be worked out but it all starts with a thought! The purpose of this training to simply be prepared for the worst case scenario, not to jump to gun violence instantly. There will be proper protocols for these systems. Let's bring these votes in to get started with some solutions for our community before we're left to scramble. Let us to all that we can because those students are our children and those employees are our family and loved ones. It is our duty as a community to do our part.
