As little children in primary, we took sleep for granted. We always wanted to go to bed later because it made us seem “cool” or just because we wanted to watch the latest episode of our favourite tv shows. We could practically go to bed at any time and still feel energetic and ready to learn the next day when we woke up. However, becoming a teen was honestly a big slap in the face. It has been proven scientifically that a teenagers natural body clock works at 25 hours, rather than the normal 24 hours. Secondary schools do not take this into consideration. This therefore means that teenagers have to wake up at profoundly irrational times, such as 5 or 6 o’clock, just to catch the early bus to school because they don’t want to be stuck in traffic and then get saturday detentions for being a few minutes later than 8:30. Teenagers need around 9 hours of sleep every night. But if you are letting teachers give us masses of homework, do you really expect us to be in bed by 9 o’clock, ready to wake up at 6?

Furthering my previous point, when children or even adults are deprived of sleep, they tend to lose focus, disallowing them to concentrate on their school work. It has been hammered into our heads that we “need to get the top grades and be the smartest in the class to become successful in life”. How can oneself possibly expect children to do that when they are running on low battery? For an electric toothbrush to work to it’s maximum power, it needs to be charged for the right amount of hours necessary. The less hours it gets, the slower and less power it contains. This is no different from teenagers. The more sleep we get, the better we can work. The less sleep we get, the worse we work. And don’t tell us to “not give you attitude” or to “stop yawning in class” because it’s ‘rude’ when you’re the ones taking out an extra possible hour from our sleep schedule.

We’re not asking for much. Just one more hour to contain our knowledge from the previous day and to prepare ourselves for the new knowledge to come forward in the next. Thank you for your time.
