Littering is a huge issue in many places around the world, including our Peel region, leading to many issues such as the death of marine birds and animals, soil, water and air pollution, negative impact on aesthetic value and local tourism and many more. 

Marine Birds and Animals                                                                                        Birds, fish and sea-animals are often unable to identify between trash and food. As a result, 1 million seabirds and 100 000 marine mammals die each year after becoming entangled in or ingesting litter. 

Ocean                                                                                                                            The ocean is home to many sea animals and plants and often find themselves surrounded by trash. Of the billions of pounds of litter that end up in the world's waterway, 70% sinks straight into the ocean. This leads to many of the plastic litter to be mistaken for food. More than 200 animal species are known to have consumed plastic, mistaking them as food (eg. turtles, whales, seals, birds, etc.)

Pollution                                                                                                                       Littering along the road, on the streets or by the bins, toxic materials or chemicals in the litter can be blown or washed into rivers, forest lands, oceans, lakes and creeks and eventually pollutes the waterways, land, forest areas, soils or aquatic environments. Cigarette butts, for instance, contain toxic substances like arsenic which can contaminate soil and water. The great pacific garbage patch is another example, which is connected to marine plastic pollution. Litter can also reduce air quality due to the smell and toxic vapour flow from the trash.
