Schools feed hundreds and maybe even thousands of kids everyday. Not all kids buy lunch from school but those who do have to carry their lunch on something. This is where school lunch trays come into play.

As many already know, Styrofoam is very bad for the environment. It can take up to 500+ years to biodegrade and with all the Styrofoam that people use in today's world, it piles up and pollutes our earth. With that, the combustion of Styrofoam releases many chemical byproducts that pollute our air as well.

I am a sophomore in high school and I noticed a big change in the lunch room this year. When I was a freshman we had reusable plastic trays that were washed everyday and used daily for the school year. This year however, the school seemed to have replaced all the reusable plastic trays with single-use Styrofoam ones instead. I was very confused by this because in my mind, why would the school choose to create more waste? Us having 2,800+ students at our school, with about 1,400 buying lunch everyday and using these single-use trays creates a lot of waste that could be prevented by cutting down the amount of trash we throw out. Another reason why our schools should stop using these trays is that, to supply the Styrofoam ones for all the kids buying lunch everyday it costs way more to purchase them then the plastic trays. After researching the tray prices and the number of students at my school, I found that if we had the plastic trays instead of Styrofoam ones it would cost $9,939.8 less every school year to supply the plastic trays. (Considering that even if the plastic trays are replaced every school year to prevent bacteria build up, it would still cost less than the Styrofoam ones)

Having schools, not just in my school district but hopefully all around the globe, use reusable plastic trays prevents unnecessary waste that is a simple and small thing that can make a big difference in the environment.
