Brennen Vinesett started this petition to School Comittee of the Southwick Regional School

On September 2, 2020 the school committee for the Southwick Tolland Granville Regional School District voted to move all Fall Sports to the Fall Sports II season which will be played February 22-April 25. This vote was taken on the same night the Superintendent presented her recommendation against playing any sports in Fall Season I. Surprisingly, there were very few questions from the school committee members and almost all of the presentation against playing went unchallenged. Unlike the process for returning to school, there was no transparency or desire to get input from the student-athletes or the taxpayers of the communities that make up the school district.

We have two major concerns with the season being moved to Fall II

1. Playing soccer, field hockey and golf outdoors in New England during February, March and April is near impossible. There are field, weather and player safety issues that we are not sure have been thoroughly thought through.

2.  We won't have any teams to play because all the surrounding schools have voted to play fall sports.  Most of these schools that have voted yes are doing some sort of hybrid model just like Southwick and many are our natural rivals, which is one of the best parts of high school sports.

It seems like a large majority of schools in Western Mass, regardless of their learning model, trust that the MIAA and DESE have made modifications to all sports to make them safe to play. These schools also seem to value high school sports as part of the total learning experience more than the administration and school committee in Southwick.

Unfortunately, this vote could ultimately lead to students leaving the school district to pursue their education and play sports elsewhere. We do not really believe those that voted understand how much the ability to play sports, some for our last time, with the teammates and friends we grew up with means to us.

We ask you to sign this petition to show your support for us as student athletes and to support the value of sports in the total educational experience.
