Scabies Outbreak In County Jail Being Ignored

Scabies Outbreak In County Jail Being Ignored
The Issue
SCABIES: Tiny mites called Sarcoptes scabiei set up shop in the outer layers of human skin. The skin does not take kindly to the invasion. As the mites burrow and lay eggs inside the skin, the infestation leads to relentless itching and an angry rash.
Yesterday Liz video chatted with her fiancé (a current Sanilac County, MI inmate) who informed her of a scabies infestation in Sanilac County Jail. One by one, men stood in front of the device showing the skin outbreak they caught since being detained at the facility. Some men have come forward; but due to concerns of authoritarian retaliation, many have not. Upon contacting the Sanilac County Health Dept. with hopes that they'd at least visit the facility, Liz was told that the county jails nurse claimed that it was a simple rash. This epidemic has not been contained, yet officers are placing new inmates in general population & in the hole with infected men; further delaying any chances of a successful recovery for those that have been treated and risking the health of those that were never infected.
Regardless to what the circumstances any of these men’s incarceration may be, they too deserve sufficient health care and to have this issue eliminated. Contrary to popular belief, many good people are jailed and not everyone imprisoned are violent & crazed criminals. A person can be jailed for something as serious as murder and as simple as not having car insurance. I say that to say that it could easily be one of us or someone we love; but it shouldn't take that for us to want to hold those in position responsible for their actions or lack of actions. This petition says to all penal institutions that they cannot do and get away with the mistreatment and flat out abuse of a person just because they're bound to their facilities. Be the voice of the seemingly forgotten.
I'm asking all that come across this petition to sign it and call/email the Sanilac County Jail Sheriff Garry Biniecki and the Sanilac County Health Department demanding that they treat the untreated and separate those treated, not treated and not infected so that this virus can be contained and eradicated. We (too) are demanding that the Sanilac Health Department do a thorough health inspection of this facility and identify any violations there may be.
