Say YES to bicycle and pedestrian safety in Coral Gables
The Issue
SAY YES TO MAKING CORAL GABLES SAFER TO BIKE AND WALK.
Miami Dade County is one of the most dangerous places to walk and bike in the country!
The Underline, a 10-mile urban trail and linear park will make our community safer to walk and bike, and it is what you asked for over 12 years.
The Underline is built on 3 community priorities, which have been consistent for over a decade.
1. Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety
2. Nature and Resiliency
3. Community Connection
With 2 1/2 of 10 miles open in Brickell and North Grove, The Underline already welcomes an average of 50,000 visitors a week. They are safely biking, running, walking alone, with friends or with their pets. When complete The Underline will serve over 100,000 residents, 14,000 businesses, 24 schools and major medical facilities, all within a 10 minute walk and is projected to host 9 million visitors annually.
Following the community's decades-long top priority, The Underline is adding a dedicated bicycle/pedestrian bridge to allow visitors to cross the canal on foot or on bike (or wheelchair).
This bridge design was reviewed by HUNDREDS of attendees at EIGHT public meetings. The comment period closed over a year ago without a single complaint about the bridge.
Why build a bridge across the Coral Gables Waterway? It is not possible to cross either the US1 or Ponce de Leon bridges on a bike. US1 has no path and the Ponce de Leon bridge usable space for cyclists is 4 feet wide. The minimum shared use path standard for The Underline is 15' plus buffer (standards established with 1 year of community input and approved by Miami Dade County Board of County commissioners in 2016).
Height of this bridge: It is higher than adjacent bridges at US1 and Ponce de Leon by, on average 3 feet.
Why should you care? If you hope to ride your bike or walk The Underline in Coral Gables, this new dedicated bridge will be the only way for you to safely cross over the Coral Gables Waterway. If you want to travel to UM, or one of the many businesses, or your kids to bike to West Lab, Ponce de Leon or Temple Judea, this bridge will be the only safe connection.
Let's fight together for a safer walking and biking future for today and tomorrow.
Sign this petition NOW: To tell the Coral Gables Commission on Tuesday, February 11th that you support The Underline pedestrian/biking bridge and to not delay its permitting which will jeopardize the construction of The Underline in Coral Gables.
Thank you!
