Say yes to a ban on social media for under 16

Say yes to a ban on social media for under 16
The Issue
Young minds are as unprepared for social media as they are for alcohol.
In recent days, we've collectively felt the deep sense of helplessness that parents experience, as depicted in the Netflix series "Adolescence."
Throughout the past year, we've watched in shock as reports of rising body image issues, anxiety, depression, and addictive behaviors have flooded the news.
Back in 2019 and 2020, our hearts poured out to those who suffered from cyberbullying.
During that time, we also engaged with documentaries like "The Social Dilemma," "I Am GenZ," and many others that explored the effects of social media on young minds.
Experts have repeatedly cautioned us about the associated dangers.
Yet, parents continue to grapple with this new reality.
At what point do we stop reacting and take action?
While the new online safety act takes effect today, it falls short of what is truly needed.
The evidence clearly shows that young minds are as unprepared for social media as they are for alcohol.
We urgently need legislation that prohibits social media use for those under 18, empowering parents to enforce stricter guidelines.
