Say NO to using artificial grass in public parks and open spaces around Cooks River
Say NO to using artificial grass in public parks and open spaces around Cooks River
The issue

For over a decade, I have dedicated myself to the care and restoration of the Cooks River. This river is not just a waterway to me but a cherished natural treasure. I have spent countless hours volunteering to restore its banks, removing invasive weeds, planting native vegetation, and regularly clearing rubbish. Through this work, I have come to deeply appreciate the beauty of the river and the rich diversity of wildlife that depends on it.
The recent proposal to install artificial grass presents a grave concern, not only for me but for the future health of the Cooks River and the environment surrounding it. Artificial grass, while marketed as a low-maintenance alternative to natural grass, comes with significant environmental and public health risks. One of the primary concerns is the risk of microplastic pollution, as the materials used in artificial grass can break down into tiny plastic particles that can enter waterways, including our beloved river.
Microplastics are a growing environmental threat, with studies showing their presence in oceans, rivers, and even in the food and water we consume. These particles can have detrimental effects on marine life and ecosystems, ultimately impacting human health. Scientific research has shown that once the plastic particles enter the environment they are extremely difficult to remove and may affect the aquatic life, birds and the overall health of the ecosystem. Our decision-makers need to seriously consider these environmental implications before proceeding with any proposal involving artificial grass.
I call upon our community to join me in speaking up for the environment and protecting the Cooks River. By signing this petition, you will be helping to ensure that our river remains a safe and thriving habitat for wildlife, and a clean resource for future generations. Additionally, sharing this petition with others will amplify our voices and pressure decision-makers to reconsider any plans that could jeopardize the Cooks River.
Stand with me in safeguarding the health of our river, its wildlife, and the well-being of future generations who will benefit from this vital environmental resource. Please sign and share this petition today.
