Say "NO to the STORE" at Southmore and Live Oak

The Issue

The corner of Southmore and Live Oak in Houston's Third Ward is at the center of a potential change that could profoundly impact our neighborhood. Developers are proposing to replat this block to erect another gas station in our area. This isn't just about erecting a new business, but about the broader implications such a development has on our community.

Firstly, no environmental studies have been conducted on the current infrastructure, which is already showing signs of deterioration. The addition of a gas station could exacerbate these conditions, leading to potential health risks for residents. The chance of ground contamination or air borne pollutants becoming prevalent is too great a risk to ignore.

Secondly, the establishment of a gas station at this intersection would lead to increased traffic congestion. Southmore and Live Oak are already bustling with activity, and additional vehicles will only heighten the problem, contributing to noise pollution and making the area less safe for pedestrians.

The community stakeholders did not receive the required 20-day Notice as required by City Ordinance.

Moreover, gas stations have been associated with increased crime rates, and our community in the Third Ward does not need this added burden. We need to consider the future of our neighborhood, and ask ourselves if this is truly the type of 'development' we need or desire for the area.

There are countless examples across the country where neighborhoods have suffered similar fates from poorly planned developments, leading to disenfranchisement and degradation of community spirit. We cannot let this be the fate of the Third Ward.

We urge local authorities and decision-makers to halt the replatting proposals and reconsider the long-term consequences of their actions. We need a comprehensive plan inclusive of an environmental impact assessment before moving forward.

We invite you to stand with us for a future that respects the health, safety, and well-being of our community. Sign this petition to demand a thoughtful, sustainable plan for the corner of Southmore and Live Oak.
