Say NO to the Proposed Reduction of Kirchoff Road
The Issue
My husband was born and raised in Rolling Meadows, and 30 years ago, we moved into our home on Kirchoff Road. Throughout his 55 years and my 30 years in this community, we’ve seen generations thrive without any issues crossing Kirchoff Road—our main thoroughfare. Friends and family, including our two daughters and six nephews and niece, have learned the importance of safety, stopping and looking both ways, and utilizing crosswalks effectively.
Now, a proposal threatens to reduce Kirchoff Road from a four-lane to a two-lane road. This change could significantly impact traffic flow and increase congestion, leading to potential safety risks for residents and commuters alike. The plan assumed lower traffic counts, now that the racetrack is closed. Kirchoff Road has long been a vital artery, providing ease of access through Rolling Meadows, facilitating community interactions, and ensuring efficient travel.
The importance of maintaining a four-lane road cannot be understated. Reducing it to two lanes would not only disrupt the lives of those who rely on it daily but also risk the prosperity and accessibility of our entire community. The planning and infrastructure of Kirchoff Road have supported families for decades, and altering its structure on a whim overlooks its proven functionality and the community's needs.
Statistics consistently show that reducing lanes can lead to increased traffic congestion; studies suggest that roads with fewer lanes can see up to a 30% increase in traffic delays and related emissions. Conversely, keeping the road as it is could maintain the operational efficiency we've relied upon for decades.
During popular races, concerts, or other large-scale events, congestion was significant, leading to long traffic backups. A 2010 concert by Lee DeWyze, for example, caused major traffic problems, leading Rolling Meadows to close some roads. We can expect more traffic and delays if the Bears move to Arlington Heights. Not only for approximately 8 home games, but the concerts and events the dome will allow them to host.
To manage high volumes during large events, police officers were required to direct traffic, especially when four lanes of traffic were opened for exiting the venue.
We need to prioritize solutions that preserve safety and flow without compromising the accessibility that families depend on. Kirchoff Road is more than just a road—it’s a legacy of community independence and trust. By keeping it a four-lane road, we’re safeguarding more than just traffic flow: we’re protecting a way of life.
Please help us keep Kirchoff Road a five-lane road, ensuring safety, accessibility, and community tradition for current and future generations. Sign this petition to voice your support and make a difference in Rolling Meadows, IL.
