Would you consider supporting Kansas residents in their fight against ICE detention center?

The Leavenworth City Commission in Kansas has approved a permit allowing CoreCivic to reopen a 1,104-bed private prison as an immigration detention center.

This decision follows a yearlong legal fight and comes despite past allegations of violence, detainee mistreatment, and obstruction of investigations tied to the facility when it previously housed federal detainees.

Leavenworth residents spoke out in opposition. Yet the permit was approved.

Private prison expansion should not be the answer to immigration policy. Communities deserve transparency, humane standards, and meaningful oversight — not more detention beds.

We call on Leavenworth city officials and Kansas state leaders to reconsider this permit and halt the reopening of the detention center.

Public safety, human dignity, and community voice must come before private prison profits.
