· Reject or defer this decision till after the Local Transport Plan is published.

Background

City of York Council plans to build a five-level multi storey car park (372 spaces) on St George's Field (currently a surface car park with space for 251 cars and 27 coaches).

The Council claim that this multi-storey car park is essential, to replace the parking that will be lost when Castle car park closes. However, the council have not yet demonstrated the need for this replacement parking or how it fits in with the city's longer-term transport strategy, nor presented a sound business case for this significant investment of taxpayer's money.

The new car park will overshadow the nearby ancient Castle Walls our wonderful riverside walk, add to traffic congestion and air pollution on York’s roads, and have a significant carbon cost. Furthermore, it doesn't provide a suitable replacement for the Blue Badge car parking due to be lost when Castle car park closes. Data suggests that York’s existing car parks have spaces to spare and that there is no need to pour tonnes of concrete into St George’s Field – costing at least £14.2million from already overstretched council funds – for an extra 121 spaces (£117,355 per space).

When will the decision be made?

Sometime in early 2022 the City of York Council Executive will consider the business case for this huge development. This is the final opportunity remaining to stop this building going ahead. If enough people support this petition it might just persuade the Council to see sense and realise how unpopular building a 5 level MSCP is in 2022. York needs to look to a cleaner better future where the things that make York special are respected and a poor development like this is rejected.

The petition

We the undersigned are asking City of York Council to defer their decision about the St George's Field multi-storey car park until after the Local Transport Plan is published. We also ask that a clear business case is drawn up for the scheme, including current car parking data from all of York's city centre car parks and demonstrating that there is a sound financial case for this investment, without the need to sell off other city centre car parks.
