Say No to Pollution in the Adirondacks
Another polluting facility is being fast tracked into the Moreau Industrial Park to make biochar, the first facility of its kind in New York. The proposed plan will be voted on May 12, 2022. Their plan is to truck in up to 720 tons of sewer sludge from other areas into town per day and burn it with wood chippings, using a process called pyrolysis. The company claims that they can somehow either remove or contain the PFA's. However, this facility is experimental and their methods are unknown and unproven.
Biochar made from sewer sludge contains toxins, like PFAS, which is also known as forever chemicals. This means that these chemicals are not easily broken down. In addition, it includes heavy metals, trace elements, and fine ash, which are all toxic. So, where will they go?
The residents of Moreau and their surrounding communities are voicing their strong opposition to the construction of this plant. The process to make this product can further destroy our air and contaminate our soil. Our health will be in jeopardy.
If this proposal passes, this plant will be within 1 mile of elementary schools and parks where our children play. The surrounding area is already home to several other industrial plants that have continuously spewed pollutants into the air. We do not need another one!
