Say NO to Nomad Week!

Say NO to Nomad Week!
The Issue
Cape Town is currently grappling with a severe housing crisis, as many locals are unable to afford the rising costs of rent, transportation, and basic necessities like food. Yet, despite these challenges, Nomad Week—an event that attracts digital nomads—continues to push the gentrification of our city. These transient visitors contribute nothing to the local economy, as they neither pay taxes nor invest in the community. Instead, they take up job opportunities that could be filled by residents, all while driving up the cost of living for the people who actually call Cape Town home.
This event, organised by Work Wanderers and the City of Cape Town, is set to take place at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, with tickets priced at R4500. This steep cost only serves the interests of those profiting from the city's struggles, leaving locals to bear the financial burden.
Andrae Smith, the South African entrepreneur behind Work Wanderers, is profiting from a situation where Cape Town's residents are the ones who suffer the consequences of rising expenses. It’s time we stand up and oppose this exploitation.
