The Issue

Petition to Oppose Legal and Illegal
Mining in Riverlea, South Africa
Protecting Our Environment, Community, and Future Generations
We, the undersigned residents, community members, and concerned citizens, hereby express our strong opposition to both legal and illegal mining activities in Riverlea, South Africa. Our collective voice is united in the urgent call to protect our environment, safeguard the health and wellbeing of our community, and secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
 Introduction
Riverlea, a vibrant community in the heart of South Africa, has long been known for its rich cultural heritage, close-knit neighbourhoods, and its proximity to Johannesburg’s economic opportunities. However, in recent   years, Riverlea has faced mounting challenges due to the proliferation of mining activities—both sanctioned by law and carried out illegally—within and near our community. These activities have brought about a host of environmental, social, and health concerns, threatening the very fabric of our society.
Background
Mining has historically played a significant role in the South African economy, providing jobs and generating revenue. Nevertheless, the negative impact of mining—particularly when it takes place in or near residential areas—cannot be overstated. Riverlea has become a focal point for both legal mining operations and illegal mining activities, commonly known as "zama zamas."; While legal mining is regulated, it still poses substantial risks. Illegal mining, by its very nature, operates outside the framework of regulation, exacerbating those risks and introducing further hazards.
Environmental Concerns
· Water Pollution: Mining operations often result in the leaching of harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and acid mine drainage into local water systems. This contaminates the water that the Riverlea community depends on for drinking, bathing, and irrigation, posing severe health risks to humans, animals, and plant life.
· Air Quality Degradation: Dust and particulate matter from mining
activities—especially from blasting and transportation—compromise the air quality in and around Riverlea. This exacerbates respiratory problems, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
· Soil Degradation and Erosion: Mining disturbs the soil structure, leading to erosion and loss of fertile topsoil. This not only affects local agriculture but also causes sedimentation in rivers and dams, disrupting aquatic ecosystems.

· Biodiversity Loss: Both legal and illegal mining operations destroy local habitats, driving away wildlife and contributing to the loss of indigenous species. The long-term ecological impact is often irreversible. Social and Health Impacts
· Community Health Risks: Exposure to toxic substances and dust from mining islinked to increased cases of asthma, bronchitis, skin diseases, and other serious health issues. Illegal mining operations, in particular, lack basic safety and environmental precautions, compounding these risks.
· Noise and Vibration: Blasting, drilling, and heavy machinery used in mining create constant noise and ground vibrations, disrupting the daily lives of Riverlea residents and negatively affecting mental well-being.
· Safety and Security: Illegal mining brings with it increased incidents of crime, violence, and social instability. Armed confrontations between rival groups, as well as between miners and law enforcement, place innocent residents in harm’s way.
· Displacement and Loss of Livelihood: Mining activities can lead to the displacement of families and the loss of traditional livelihoods, further entrenching poverty and social inequality within our community.
Economic Considerations
· Lack of Long-term Benefits: While mining may provide short-term economic gains, the long-term damage to Riverlea’s environment, health, and social fabric far
outweighs any temporary financial benefits.
· Property Value Decline: The presence of mining operations reduces property values,
making it difficult for residents to sell their homes or attract new investments to the
area.
· Cost of Cleanup: The legacy of mining is often polluted land and water that require costly remediation—a burden that frequently falls on taxpayers and future generations.
Legal and Regulatory Failures
· Inadequate Enforcement: Existing regulations are often poorly enforced, allowing both legal and illegal mining activities to continue unchecked.
· Lack of Transparency and Accountability: Communities like Riverlea are rarely consulted or adequately informed about mining projects, leaving residents powerless to defend their interests.
· Corruption and Collusion: Reports of corruption and collusion between mining entities and public officials undermine trust in the legal framework and contribute to the proliferation of illegal operations.
Our Demands
We, the undersigned, demand urgent and decisive action from the relevant authorities, including the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, local government officials, and law enforcement agencies, to:

· Immediately halt all legal and illegal mining activities within and near Riverlea.
· Conduct a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, with full community
participation, before considering any future mining applications.
· Ensure strict enforcement of environmental and safety regulations, with regular monitoring and transparent reporting mechanisms.
· Provide effective support for the rehabilitation of affected land and water sources, prioritizing community health and ecological restoration.
· Invest in sustainable, alternative economic opportunities for Riverlea residents, reducing dependence on mining and fostering long-term prosperity.
· Implement robust anti-corruption measures and hold accountable any individuals or entities found complicit in illegal activities.
