The Issue

We, the concerned families and residents of Dublin, urgently and respectfully call on you to reject Map 3 of the high school redistricting plan. This proposal is fundamentally flawed, undermining the core principles of safety, fairness, and fiscal responsibility that our community holds dear.

Map 3 would forcibly reassign students from neighborhoods closest to Dublin Jerome High School to Dublin Coffman High School, a facility over five miles away. This decision is not only illogical but imposes significant and unnecessary burdens on our children, our families, and our entire community.

Our collective opposition is based on these critical points:

  1. 🚸 Student Safety is Compromised: This plan replaces safe, walkable routes to a nearby school with long, daily commutes. It needlessly increases the risk of teen driving accidents and forces hundreds of students onto already congested roads, creating a preventable safety hazard.
  2. 💔 Community Bonds are Shattered: This plan deliberately severs the strong social and community ties that our children have built over years. Forcing them to leave behind their established peer networks and support systems as they enter high school causes real emotional distress and isolation. Imagine the upheaval for a student who can see Jerome from their window but is forced to take a 30-minute bus ride away from their friends and community.
  3. 🚍 Fiscal Responsibility is Ignored: More bus needs and longer bus routes mean wasted taxpayer dollars on unnecessary fuel, maintenance, and driver time. At a time when fiscal efficiency is paramount, Map 3 knowingly inflates transportation costs for years to come.
  4. 🌍 Sustainability Pledges are Broken: Dublin has committed to reducing traffic and emissions. Busing students across town to a more distant school is a direct contradiction to these environmental goals, increasing our community's carbon footprint instead of reducing it.
  5. ⚖️ Fairness and Logic are Abandoned: It is fundamentally unfair to reassign students who live in the shadow of one high school to a distant one, while students living farther away remain. Proximity must be a primary factor in creating a stable and sensible redistricting plan.

Our request is clear and united:

We strongly urge the Dublin City Schools Board of Education to reject Map 3 and adopt a redistricting plan that prioritizes:

  • The safety and well-being of our students.
  • The preservation of our community's social fabric.
  • Fiscal responsibility and environmental sustainability.
  • The simple, logical principle that students should attend the high school closest to their home.

We stand together, not just as signatories, but as a community demanding a plan that reflects our values and protects our children’s high school experience. Please, listen to our voices and choose a better path for Dublin.

I live in Bristol Commons, so this would impact my family. I fully understand the gravity of the situation from a personal and professional perspective. Having been through several redistricting processes, I have always entrusted the superintendent to establish and execute a fair process. Despite the events of the past week, I expect Dr. M to ensure all eight criterias are used when making a final decision. I will continue to hold that standard to this process. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or additional comments.
