The Issue

The Drummond Hotel was an iconic landmark in the heart of Crieff, cherished and utilized by our entire community for generations. Its presence has been an integral part of our town's history and cultural identity, serving as a gathering place and symbol of our vibrant community spirit. Recently, Perth and Kinross Council has proposed to develop this historic site into affordable housing, a decision we believe would not best serve the interests of our community.

It's important to recognize that Crieff, like any growing town, has a need for affordable housing. However, the Drummond Arms Hotel site is not the right location for such a development. Crieff boasts multiple other council-owned sites which could be developed for affordable housing without sacrificing a site of significant historical and emotional value to the community. Transforming the Drummond Arms Hotel site into affordable housing would mean losing a valuable community space and diminishing our town's character.

Imagine what we, as a community, could create on the Drummond Arms site—a vibrant public square, a center for arts and culture, or a communal garden, providing benefits not just for today, but for future generations. Retaining the site for communal or civic use could enhance Crieff’s appeal, drawing visitors and supporting local businesses, while also providing a relaxation and event space for residents.

There is also a concern that such a prominent location in the center of town is best kept for purposes that benefit the entire community, rather than housing which would serve a smaller group of individuals. By exploring alternative sites for affordable housing that the council has shown resourcefulness and willingness could be demonstrated in balancing development with preservation, serving the broader needs and desires of Crieff's residents.

Please sign this petition to urge Perth and Kinross Council to reconsider their plans for the Drummond Arms Hotel site. Let's preserve this piece of our heritage and explore more suitable locations for affordable housing development that support the continuing growth and spirit of our beloved town of Crieff. Together, we can ensure that our community's voice is heard in decisions that shape the future of our town.
