As we continue to navigate through COVID-19 and the business re-opening process, I hope each and everyone of you that chose to open today had a safe and prosperous return. There has been so much going on in the news in regards to Dallas salon owner Shelly Luther, who is not a licensed Cosmetologists, that I could no longer remain silent. I created this petition last year because I am passionate about the Barber and Cosmetology industry and I didn't close this petition because I knew that I would need to speak with the signers again regarding the legislative fate of our industry. I never thought that I would have to speak to the signers about a salon owner using the Barber and Cosmetology industry as a pawn for her political agenda!
The Barber and Cosmetology industry is a professional unit that represents the industry as a whole with no racial or political divide as "We Are One"! Salon owner Shelly Luther's actions over the last few weeks did not reflect the unity, integrity, and responsible attitudes of the Barber and Cosmetology industry. Instead, her actions demonstrated a blatant disregard for authority, public safety, and human life. Her actions seemed to be more political, thus, creating a social and racial divide within the industry and society.
Why did the rules set forth by our U.S, state, and local elected officials apply to some and not to others? Why do we elect judges and deminish their authority while they are enforcing current mandates? Why did our Governor allow someone who defied their orders become apart of a taskforce to represent the Texas Barber and Cosmetology industry for the reopeing process? Let me add that on April, 28th, Shelly Luther asked via social media for information on the TDLR Cosmetology Rules and Regulations Handbook. Shouldn't she have known where to retrieve this information as a TDLR approved salon and a person being recruited by the Texas Governor? Why did Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton support Shelly Luther? Didn't our leaders close us down? Wasn't Judge Eric Moye' enforcing their orders?
We have all had economic set backs due to COVID-19. Our country and world leaders stated that "We Are All In This Together" but are we? Weren't we all asked to shelter in place to keep this pandemic that does not discriminate against race, color, creed, or political affiliations from spreading? Didn't the schools shut down to prevent children from contracting and passing the virus? Weren't we directed by our President, Governor, TDLR, and city elected officials to follow the CDC protocols to stop the spread of this virus? Shelly Luther did not feel the need to do so and used the Barber and Cosmetology industry and children as a pawn to justify her bad behavior while receiving contributions from a GoFundMe account that to date, is at $500k, and while being approved for the SBA PPP loan that many industry professionals around the nation have been approved for or continue to wait in line for the approval process to be completed. As of May 6th, the news media stated she awaits approval for the SBA EIDL approval process.
In closing, we need to remember that our goal is to support the legislative leaders that have the Texas Barber and Cosmetology Industry interest at heart!
