For the 2026 World Cup FIFA has introduced a Hydration Break during both the 1st and 2nd half of the game. The duration of these breaks is 3 minutes long. This threatens the integrity of the game which has been 2 halves of 45 minutes  with extra time added on by the discreation of referee for any injuries or substitutions. With the introduction of these additional breaks the game has now gone from 2 halves to 4 quarters. The stoppage in play affects the momentum of the game especially if one team is pressing hard and has the upper hand. When the play is stopped this gives the other team time to rest, regroup or restrategize and could affect the whole outcome of the match. FIFA will claim that these breaks are for the safety of the players but as there are many pauses during the game and water bottles could be placed in close proximity around the pitch for players to access when the ball is not in play. These breaks give the TV coverage the opportunity to cut away for commercials and generate more revenue.
