Say NO to GIANT Northridge Mall Apartment Project

The Issue

Brookfield Properties, owners of the Northridge Fashion Center, is proposing to build a giant 350-unit market-rate apartment building and adjacent (apartment use only) parking structure.

The negative impacts of this project are:

  • Reduction of parking spots in the northwest lot by over 60%!
    • Traffic study conducted during COVID and does not take into account the increase in traffic due to the reopening of the movie theater, new restaurant or the weekly farmers market
    • Parking will spill into abject neighborhoods and the Plaza Di Northridge shopping center (which is already overcrowded)
  • Handicap access
  • Loss of 50% of ingress/egress points
  • Access restriction for emergency services (LAPD / LAFD)
  • Increased traffic on Plummer Street, Shirley Avenue (already overcrowded), Prarie Street, and Nordhoff Street
  • Increasing traffic in other parking lots increases the risk of a pedestrian accident
    • Crosswalk in front of Red Robin
    • People who consistently cross outside of the crosswalk
    • No real walkway exists between Woodranch and Yardhouse.  Customers must walk on the roadway
  • Apartments are all market-rate non-family units (<3 bedrooms), not what this community needs
  • The project currently allowed a zero-foot setback on Shirley Avenue
  • This project does nothing to increase the walkability of the mall or our neighborhood in general

Every single consumer of the mall will be negatively affected by this project as the cascade of parking issues and crowding permeates the entire mall.

The only logical conclusion is this will drive customers away.

Note - This project is not currently supported by the Northridge West Neighborhood Council & its Planning & Land Use Committee
