Say no to Europe becoming an AI continent
Il problema
In recent years, the European Union has channeled immense resources and political momentum into asserting its position as the world's first artificial intelligence continent. This ambition, while undeniably futuristic, raises some serious concerns among those of us who call Europe home. We are witnessing a rapid increase in the construction of data centers and the expansion of so-called "Gigafactories" in our communities, often with little regard for environmental impact and without soliciting input from the local population.
These developments are taking place in regions that are already grappling with critical environmental issues. Forests are being cut down to make way for data centers, natural landscapes are being sacrificed at the altar of technological advancement, and our already depleted air quality is further compromised.
It is essential to question the priorities of our political leaders who seem to be investing millions, even billions, without genuinely needing or reflecting on what the citizens want or need.
Indeed, these projects appear in stark contrast to the immediate environmental challenges we face. Across Europe, we are contending with deteriorating air quality, dwindling water supplies, and the loss of precious green spaces which are critical not only for biodiversity but for our health and well-being.
Such considerations seem to have been overlooked in the zeal to establish Europe as an AI powerhouse.
It is high time for EU leaders to pause and listen to the concerns of their constituents.
Environmental impact assessments should become a mandatory part of planning and developing these technologies to ensure that any growth is sustainable and equitable. Furthermore, investment should pivot towards renewable energy sources to power these developments sustainably, without further compromising our environment.
Our goal is not to stifle innovation, but to ensure that it harmonizes with the essential principles of environmental stewardship and public participation.
Europe's future must be one that prioritizes green industry and infrastructure that coexist elegantly with our natural landscape, ensuring a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive technological development.
Join us in urging the EU to reconsider its approach.
Sign our petition to demand more transparent, inclusive, and environmentally conscious policies before Europe irreversibly loses its environmental legacy and natural beauty.
Our voices matter, and it is time for them to be heard.
