Say No To Dundrum Local Area Plan

Say No To Dundrum Local Area Plan
The Issue
Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown County Council have published a draft Local Area Plan for Dundrum with a vision to create a 10 Minute neighborhood. As residents, many of us are in disagreement with this plan in its current form for reasons set out. We are looking for local residents with the same concerns as us to sign our petition. Our local councilors will be voting either FOR or AGAINST this LAP in the forthcoming weeks and all of them will be looking for your vote at next year's election...Let them know how your feel....
Please note as residents most of us are pro-development and pro-progress, but the right development for Dundrum and logical well thought out planning that is "inclusive for all". We believe the council should go back to the drawing board on this draft LAP.
(Kindly ignore donate tab option on this website as we are not seeking donations, only your petition )
Here are some of the issues many residents have raised.
Road closures/ Limited Accessibility & One-way systems.
Closure to vehicles from Barton Road East & Ballinteer Road into Dundrum Village. Sydenham Road/ Villas on to Kilmacud Road. One-way system in Dundrum Village to be made permanent. Removal of slip road onto Wyckham by-pass from Sandyford Road. Reconfiguration of Traffic at Taney cross.
Do you have concerns about road closures, reduced vehicle accessibility into the village and the surrounding areas?. We feel this will not only damage local businesses and jobs, but will also exclude a significant segment of our society that find it difficult to walk and cycle. Furthermore, the proposed road closures will put unnecessary strain on families/ working parents trying to navigate the twice-daily school-run and also impact local commuter routes to fulfill work commitments. These additional road closures will further reduce our Village access points from 18 lanes down to 2.
High-rise buildings
Have you concerns about Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown County Council's Local Area Plan 2023 statement regarding the developer's proposed high rise Dundrum Village SHD ? "Allow for greater height along the Bypass (of up to 11 storeys) in alternating heights to create visual interest".
In our opinion, it appears these statements contradict the councils 120 page report in 2022 urging An Bord Pleanala to reject the developer's scheme, which they said "was in conflict with the county development plan in a number of respects"..... ”and the average height of 12 storeys along the Dundrum bypass side of the scheme would have an “oppressing and dominant effect”, DLR 2022
Bus Gates & Public Car Parks
The proposal to have hundreds of daily buses going through small residential roads in Dundrum is of concern to many in our community. Also, if the Dundrum Village SHD receives approval, both car parks will be closed for development, which again will affect residents, especially the elderly in our community or people with mobility issues that rely on their cars.
Dundrum Carnegie Library
Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown CC proposes to close our iconic Dundrum Carnegie library which has served our community well for over 100 years.
The Carnegie library building we understand will then have another use which has not been determined yet ( building will remain standing as its listed, PHEW ) but hey !!! why would that matter as its the most iconic historical building in Dundrum with over 100 years of heritage.
Despite being the only historical building in Dundrum that has an important public daily use, some speak of architectural conservation in Dundrum with other main street buildings but appear to have no issue with this iconic building in Dundrum being closed down for its intended purpose as a library for the people by Carnegie Foundation in 1914.
From reading many of the 897 submissions made to DLR other concerns are,
- Lack of meaningful consultation and engagement with our community about the proposed Local Area Plan.
- Overcrowed Public Transport not being able to cope with new demand after developments are built.
- Vague information about the proposed new Civic Centre height, scale, and location.
