I love St. Joseph, Missouri, for its unique charm, tranquility, and natural beauty, and I know many of you feel the same way. However, our beloved community is now facing an imminent threat: the proposal to annex land and establish data centers in our area. This development could severely damage our environment, an aspect of St. Joe we deeply cherish.

Data centers, by nature, are resource-intensive. They consume vast amounts of fresh water for cooling, contributing to the depletion of our precious local water resources. Additionally, they introduce significant noise pollution, which disrupts the peace and quiet our city is known for. The construction and operation of these facilities could also lead to increased light pollution, affecting our local wildlife and disrupting the daily lives of residents.

This move is not only environmentally destructive; it is also financially burdensome. The proposed projects will cost the city a substantial amount of money, funds that could be better spent on improving current infrastructure and community services that benefit all residents of St. Joe. Let's not forget the other dangers: potential increases in traffic, housing disruptions, and the overall commercial encroachment into our community spaces.

We urgently call for the implementation of planning and zoning ordinances that can effectively limit the noise and light pollution associated with these developments. Moreover, we demand a moratorium of 12 to 18 months on further decisions regarding this annexation and data center proposal. This period will allow for thorough research, community consultation, and the consideration of less harmful alternatives.

We must urge our city council to address these concerns transparently and responsibly. Our local government's duty is not only to foster economic growth but also to maintain the livability and health of our community.
