Say NO to cyanide bombs on public lands

The Issue

Every person and every animal deserves to be safe on our public lands. Yet the federal government is allowing the return of deadly “cyanide bombs”,  which are poison devices that put wildlife, pets, and even people directly in harm’s way.

These devices, known as M-44 sodium cyanide ejectors, are indiscriminate poison traps designed to kill predators. When triggered, they blast sodium cyanide into an animal’s face. They cannot tell the difference between a coyote, wolf, fox, endangered species, domestic dog, or even a human being.

In 2017, a 14-year-old boy in Idaho accidentally triggered one of these devices while out with his dog. He was poisoned, and his dog died in front of him.

Later that same year, a wolf from Oregon’s Shamrock Pack was killed by one of these cyanide bombs; an unintentional victim of a cruel and reckless system.

Now, according to reports, an agreement between federal agencies will reopen 245 million acres of Bureau of Land Management public lands to the use of these dangerous poison devices on behalf of the livestock industry on a "case by case basis".

This is unacceptable.

Public lands belong to ALL of us; hikers, campers, families, wildlife watchers, hunters, photographers, pet owners, and future generations. They should not become poison fields.

These poison devices:

  • Endanger wildlife, including non-target and endangered species
  • Put pets and people at risk
  • Put humans at risk
  • Promote cruel and outdated predator control methods
  • Fail to provide long-term solutions to livestock conflict

We are calling on the Bureau of Land Management and all federal agencies to:

  • Permanently ban M-44 sodium cyanide devices on all public lands
  • Protect wildlife, pets, and people from indiscriminate poison traps
  • Invest in nonlethal coexistence and wildlife management solutions
  • Prioritize ecological health and biodiversity over outdated lethal control practices

Our public lands should be places of life, recreation, and coexistence. Not hidden death traps.

Protect wildlife. Protect people.
NO CYANIDE BOMBS ON OUR PUBLIC LANDS.

Sign this petition today and demand a permanent ban on cyanide bombs on America’s public lands.
