Say NO! to Caney Creek "No Wake Zones" Proposed by Matagorda County

Say NO! to Caney Creek "No Wake Zones" Proposed by Matagorda County
The Issue
People who use their boats to travel great distances on Sargent, Texas' Caney Creek to go to and from East Matagorda Bay, Mitchell's Cut, Intercoastal Waterway, Gulf of Mexico, or simply want to enjoy water skiing, fishing, or other types of water sports will be severely and negatively impacted by the arbitrary and capricious implementation of 6 proposed "No Wake Zones" (NWZs) along the length of Caney Creek. Decades ago, Matagorda County implemented 3 NWZs along the creek where there were gas pumps - the "need" was understandable since wakes from passing boats could cause a dangerous disruption during the fuel exchange. These 3 NWZs have long outlived their intended purpose since there haven't been any gas pumps on the creek for almost 20 years, yet the County has allowed these to remain in place, ignored and unmaintained, despite the obvious lack of "need". Now the County wants to double the number to 6 NWZs despite there not being a "need" for the majority of them - this is government overreach. Caney Creek is the main artery of transportation for boats traveling in this area, and adding "6 de facto school zones" will greatly increase the time needed to transit along the length of the creek, disrupt water skiing and other water sports, as well as create serious unintended consequences, such as damage created by larger wakes, conflicts between residents, law enforcement, and total disregard of these NWZs by some people, increasing said conflicts. All of this, with no from the County documentation for the actual "need", such as documentation of date/location of injuries or damage from boats transiting along the areas of the creek where the proposed NWZs will be. One proposed NWZ is for a PRIVATE, GATED boat ramp where the owners don't even want it, yet the County wants to restrict ALL persons in Matagorda County transiting Caney Creek for the supposed benefit of a private entity that doesn't even want it. This is an absurd use of our County tax dollars!
If Matagorda County is successful in implementing these unneeded and unwanted NWZs, people in the area that use Caney Creek will have a diminished quality of life, loss of freedom from the full use and enjoyment of the creek, property values will be negatively impacted, and this raises the possibility of conflicts between residents, law enforcement, and other unintended consequences. These proposed NWZs are simply not needed!
It's extremely important that you make your voice heard by signing this petition NOW so that we may present your opposition to these NWZs to the Matagorda County Judge and Commissioners at the upcoming Public hearing on this subject.
