Say No to Canal Overlook - a disruption of wildlife and small towns

The Issue

Per a DelawareOnline article dated 1/3/23, plans are in motion to develop a 108-home development off of Cox Neck Rd in New Castle County, DE.

Not only will this cause major traffic and safety issues within our current small towns of Delaware City and St Georges, this will destroy our native landscape and the homes of countless wildlife.

As a resident, the majority of neighbors I've spoken to within our community had never heard of this plan before today. And yet Bill Bell, councilman of District 12, is quoted in DelawareOnline saying he "spoke with a few people from the area" and "hasn’t received any comments against the project."

I am doubtful that anyone was surveyed, or at least doubtful of the sample size, and believe the majority of residents wish to conserve our ecosystem and communities. We should not contribute to the increasingly common issues of modern building (unneeded housing, worsening surface runoff - not to mention in an area surrounded by water, and increasing traffic in an area unequipped to handle it). The majority of the land surrounding this proposed project is federally preserved, and I would ask that be seriously considered by NCC.

I am asking you to sign this petition so that we can bring our concerns to the next public meeting, or create one if not already planned. According to DelawareOnline, the County Council could vote on the project this month.

Additionally, I'm asking you to please contact Mr. Bell and explain any concerns you may have. Whether they were covered above or not, our voices matter and should be heard.

Thank you!

Kate Hannon
