Say Gay Lowell!

The Issue

This petition began when we heard word that Andy Anderson (superintendent of Tricreek School Corporation) would no longer be allowing teachers to display anything painting the LGBTQIA+ community in a positive, supportive light, in the classroom. This seems to include signs that welcome students and let them know that their classroom is a safe space. Additionally, pride flags may only be displayed when relating to curriculum standards, as teachers must remain neutral on “religion, politics, and controversial topics” at all other times. Though the LGBTQIA+ community does not deserve to be categorized as one of these, *allegedly according to Indiana law*, pride flags are political symbols, making them fall under that criteria. Lowell schools are not the first in the area who have fallen victim to this alleged minor detail of the law.

Therefore at this time, this petition is pushing for Indiana lawmakers to re-classify pride flags as not a political symbol, but rather, a representation of identities, as well as the fight for liberty by those identities. By re-defining the classification of pride flags in Indiana, educators have freedom to display pride flags, and varieties of it (i.e. pride stickers, “all are welcome” signs, equality stickers, etc.)

No child deserves to feel like their existence is too political or controversial for the classroom. Taking away positive, queer representations will not make the LGBTQIA+ youth go away. Rather, it’ll only contribute to their suffering, as they’ll feel less comfortable, confident, and safe in an educational setting. That’s why we need your help to change this in Indiana, before it’s too late. We Say Gay!
