Saving The Future of Mountain Gorillas

The Issue

Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) are almost extinct because their habitats are being destroyed, they are being hunted, and because of climate change. There are fewer than 1,100 left in their natural habitats, so we need to rush and save them (Worldostats, 2024). Their forest habitats in the Virunga Mountains of Central Africa, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Bwindi impenetrable forests, are being cleared for agriculture, mining, and humans building homes to live in.

Mountain gorillas play a critical role in maintaining the health of forest ecosystems. As they move along the forest, they disperse seeds, which enable plants to grow and re-establish their habitat. This is at the heart of maintaining the health of the forest, and as such, it contributes to the well-being of other animals, such as birds, insects, and small mammals, and maintains the balance of the ecosystem in which they reside.

How we can Save them!
1.) Governments should implement anti-poaching legislation and increase protected areas to secure gorilla habitats.

2.) Additional funds for monitoring and patrols by rangers will serve to discourage illegal operations.

3.) Investment in sustainable livelihood will reduce reliance on forest for livelihood.

4.) Responsible tourism needs to be regulated to reduce human footprint so that tourists can adhere to the right and distancing protocols.
